Tree Plantation & Land Restoration

ECOSOM restores degraded land and combats deforestation through native tree planting, seed ball technology, and invasive species removal.
This work supports biodiversity, improves soil fertility, and strengthens climate resilience in Somalia.

Tree Plantation

We make sure trees thrive so they can provide food and incomes today and protect the environment for tomorrow. Our approach focuses on four key areas, working to tackle poverty and the effects of the climate crisis by growing trees, improving incomes, and restoring and protecting land.

Project Goal: Our goal is to plant more trees in Somalia by 2030 to make Somalia Green by implementing environmental sustainability projects. We are dedicated to supporting the presidential climate change campaign aimed at reducing greenhouse emissions and stopping deforestation.

We participate in various tree growing initiatives across the country in collaboration with other stakeholders and our key partners including working with schools, streets and communities in the Benadir Region. We have donated 10,000 trees in the Somalia Green Initiative. The project provides sustainable incomes for local community members, training for both teachers and pupils in planting and caring for the trees, an understanding of the local and global importance of protecting the environment and thus helping to prevent further deforestation. We aim to plant more trees, educate more people, get more hands in the dirt, and support more lives across the globe. We believe that climate change is a reality we can no longer wish away.

Our Approach
  1. Clear Invasive Prosopis: Reclaim farmland by removing this harmful species.

2. Biochar Seed Balls: Plant drought-resistant trees like acacia and moringa.

3. Community Engagement: Involve locals, especially women and youth, in reforestation.

Impact So Far

6,000+ farmers benefited from restored farmland.

3,500 ha of Prosopis cleared.

4,500 ha of land restored with trees and seed balls.

1.3M+ trees saved or planted since 2019.

Seed Ball Technology

5,000–10,000 seed balls planted per hectare.

60–75% germination rate.

30–60% survival without irrigation.

70% suppression of Prosopis regrowth.

Future Goals (by 2026)

Train more communities in reforestation and land management.

Restore 9,000 ha of degraded land.

Plant 2 million additional trees.
